Nappies are about to become a big part of your life, so you want to make sure you choose the right nappies for you. Our Nappy Guide outlines the choices available and the cost implications of each. We have focused on the best nappies for 0-6 months within our recommendations, however, as your baby gets older and its bottom is less sensitive you may find you can make bigger savings by using different brands and making the most of current offers at supermarkets and elsewhere online. If you opt for reusable nappies, you may also need to purchase liners, depending on the brand you choose.

Our mums say:

"It's definitely worth looking for deals on nappies - Boots and the various supermarkets often have special offers if you're buying more than one pack."

Changing mat

(From 0 months +) Back to top

A plastic mat to change your baby's nappy. It is worth investing in a larger more sturdy mat to use when at home. You may want to consider buying two - one for the nursery and one for elsewhere in the house.

Our mums say:

"If you live in a two storey house it's definitely worth buying two changing mats - one for upstairs and one for downstairs."

Cotton wool pads or cloth wipes

(From 0 months +) Back to top

For the first 12 weeks of nappy changing, you'll need to use cotton wool and water rather than wipes to top and tail the baby. This is recommended by the NHS (check) to prevent skin reactions and nappy rash.

Our mums say:

"You can use washable wipes with water instead - especially if you're using reusable nappies."

Nappy bin and refill cassettes

(From 0 months +) Back to top

This is a bin designed to keep in the nursery; it has a liner that helps seal nappies. It's particularly useful in the first few months when there's a lot faeces to deal with and you don't want to have to take the nappies outside to dispose of them. Later on it's just as easy to dispose of nappies in an outside bin - your baby won't be excreting as often, but it will be much smellier! Nappy bin refill cassettes are also available - these line and help seal individual nappies which in turn reduces odour from the bin.
