Changing bag

(From 0 months +) Back to top

Changing bags are specially designed to carry round everything you need for baby changing whilst you're out and about.

Our mums say:

"You often get a free changing bag from Bounty. However, it's nice to have a bag you enjoy carrying around all the time. Looking back I'd say it's worth treating yourself to one you really like, as you will use it for at least 2 years."

Pram, pushchair or travel system

(From 0 months +) Back to top

There's a lot to consider when choosing a push chair, and it's also one of the most expensive purchases you will make. Have a look through our Pushchair Guide before making your decision. There is a lot of competition when it comes to price, so it's always worth shopping around. However, when comparing prices make sure to check which extras are included - you may think you've found a very cheap deal only to find that essential extras will cost extra.

Our mums say:

"Most stores will price match the push chair you want if you find it cheaper elsewhere."

Baby carrier & accessories

(From 0 months +) Back to top

A device that enables you to strap the baby to yourself. Being close to you can reassure the baby and means no push chair is needed. However, you should check individual carriers safety instructions as some are not suitable for newborns.

Our mums say:

"For me this was essential. It enabled me to get out for walks which kept me sane, and my baby always calmed down with the rhythm of my walking and happily slept in it. I even used it in supermarket shops as he was content in it and I had my arms free!"

Car seat (rear facing (Group 0, 0+))

(From 0 months +) Back to top

The law requires all children travelling in cars to use the correct child restraint until they are either 135 cm in height or the age of 12 (whichever they reach first). If you don't have a car but plan to take your newborn home in a taxi, you will still need a car seat. Newborn babies must travel in a rear-facing car seat. It's important that the car seat is properly installed, and for that reason it's worth buying your car seat from a company that will fit it for you. Halfords offer this service. The car seat cannot be installed in a seat with an airbag. For some car seats you can also get an isofix base - although you should check first that it will be compatible with your car. This ensures full safety and makes taking the car seat in and out much easier too. This is one time when you should NOT buy second hand, as you won't know the history of it and whether it is genuinely safe and fit for purpose.

Our mums say:

"Make sure you get a seat which is compatible with your car - not all seats match all cars."

Car seat isofix base

(From 0 months +) Back to top

An isofix base makes fitting your car seat into the car correctly and safely very easy. You need to check your car has isofix fittings (not all cars do) and then buy a compatible car seat.

Our mums say:

"An isofix base makes loading and unloading car seats so easy…they literally just slot onto the base."

Travel cot

(From 3 months +) Back to top

A folding cot to be used when visiting friends or going on holiday. It's worth considering what is important to you before purchasing a travel cot. You can buy very light travel cots which are great if you are travelling overseas, but if you want a travel cot that will last until your baby is moving into a toddler bed you will want to go for a larger size. Some travel cots come with a blackout system so you don't need to worry about blinds / curtains and light in a room keeping your baby awake.

Our mums say:

"I used this as a day bed for my twins as it saved going up and down stairs for nap times, which is very important when you've had a C-section. I was able to put both in until about 5 months and this then meant that I had at least one travel cot when travelling and only needed to worry about hiring/borrowing one other."
